Kansas City, MO, Tuesday Morning

Some days Kate just felt like an adult. This seemed to be one of them. Maybe it was the fact that she was actually having some vaguely healthy cereal for breakfast, or that she was reading the morning paper, or something seemingly inconsequential like that. It couldn't be work, because she had the day off, blissfully. There'd been screaming children and grouchy old men all over her flights yesterday.

Maybe she was just happy, and therefore willing to feel like she could be a responsible and productive member of society.

"Oh, man, there's a sale at this one furniture store," she said, mostly to herself, spotting the ad in the paper, "we should totally go."

That was an adult thing to say, wasn't it?

"Do we need furniture?" Bod asked, wandering in at the tail end of that statement while he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. "Or is this just one of the trips to shop just for the fun of it?"

See? He'd learned.

"Bed," Kate said, with a little smile spared at his sleepiness. "I mean, not that I'm not gonna sleep all over you forever anyway, but it'd be nice if it was actually one made for two people."

"Hmm." That didn't sound like a half bad idea even if he didn't really mind the smaller bed and being Kate's mattress. "That might be something worth looking into. What's the sale look like?"

"Cheap." Duh. She swirled the cereal around in her bowl, absently. "They need more pictures on this thing, I need to know if they have beds with nice headboards."

"Headboards?" Bod repeated, coming to peer over her shoulder at the ad she was looking at. "Why headboards?"

Kate glanced up at him over her shoulder, then snickered. "I don't know, because the one we have now has a boring one?"

"But, it does the job, doesn't it?" Bod replied, shrugging. "I didn't know you were such a headboard aficionado, Kate."

"Well, it'd be easier to attach stuff to a more ornate one."

And she didn't mean the Bad Religion stickers and the like that were plastered all over the frame of their current bed. She'd grown out of that particular decorating phase some years ago.

"And what might you be attaching to our potential new headboard?" asked Bod, resting his chin on her shoulder and smiling.

Kate turned her head for a light, lazy kiss on his cheek. "Well, your birthday's coming up..."

Was it mean to make such cryptic references? Maybe, but he could usually expect her to explain herself eventually.

"Is it?" Bod asked, feigning surprise at that. "I hadn't even realized. And a new headboard with things attached would be my birthday present?"

Kate snickered again. "Last year, I would've attached you to a headboard with oe of your presents. But we didn't have a proper headboard at all."

Damn that sofa bed in Charmaine's house. Even if she'd made it work, somehow.

"We barely had a proper bed," Bod pointed out, kissing her neck before straightening up and making his way over to get some water. "I'd be up for a day of bed shopping if that's what you'd like to do. I've got nothing else planned."

"Awesome, neither do I." Like she planned anything for her days off. She wasn't that much of an adult. "I can even promise to be discrete about comparing beds for how well they accommodate handcuffs."

"I don't know if the salesperson would quite know how to handle that if you did bring up wanting a headboard for its...ability to be attached to," Bod said, taking a few sips of his water now that he had it. "You might fluster him."

It was a talent she had.

"What, so I'm not supposed to ask a salesperson whether a bed can take a very pale English fellow being hadncuffed to it?" Kate asked, with mock surprise. "Good to know!"

"The very pale English fellow in question appreciates you not doing that," Bod laughed, shaking his head. "And I bet the salesperson would too. I am sure that type of question wasn't in his training."

"Pfft, if I was selling furniture, I'd expect to hear those kind of uestions all the time," Kate claimed. "I mean, how many different questions can people ask about just sleeping in beds?"

"Yes but you, my dear, are a very special person with an extremely dirty mind," Bod said, stepping closer to her and kissing her nose. "You are not the norm and I mean that as a compliment."

"My mind isn't that much dirtier than most people's," Kate objected, absolutely without anything with which to back that up. "I'm just more vocal about it."

"Of course," Bod said, not really believing that. He gave her another little kiss anyway. "Besides shopping for the bed, was there anything else you wanted to do today?"

"Dunno, we probably need groceries and stuff." Oh hey, another adult thought! "Other than that, I've got nada."

"Yes, we are getting a little low on groceries," Bod agreed, nodding. "We could go out for lunch, if you'd like. In between the bed shopping and the groceries."

"Ooh, that'd be nice," Kate said, nodding back at him. "You know, also 'cause we should do all that not-at-home stuff while we still have the Green Hornet."

Not that they couldn't get the car back from Tara practically whenever they needed it, but still.

"I'm surprised your mom hasn't asked for that back yet," Bod replied with a little laugh. "It is a rather nice car, after all."
