Overland Park, KS, Wednesday Afternoon

Ah, blissful days off. Perfect for doing pointless things! Okay, maybe not so pointless, they had some minor things to shop for. But mostly, Kate had gotten her mother's car and dragged Bod off to her old favorite mall just for the hell of it. Just to see if it was still the same and you could still get decent ice cream from the food court.

She stopped near the entrance after coming in, and looked around. It was your basic Midwestern mall. A little on the small side, and maybe it had seen better days. "Jesus, I haven't been here in years." A little over three years, to be exact. "And it's exactly the same! You'd think they'd have renovated a little."

She actually sounded a little gleeful.

"Guess it's exotic for you," Ben replied, because there was a certain sense of snark about most people Kate had ever let even a little bit close to her.

Also, Bod's accent was prominent when you were in Kansas.

"Exotic enough," Bod chuckled. "I've been in American long enough to know what most of these places are. I've just never been to this specific mall. We haven't been back in Kansas that long."

Ben nodded. "Cool," he said, for want of anything better. Kate kind of had to wonder at the fact that... he actually seemed to have changed, somewhat.

The elevator started moving again.

"There we go," Bod said, sighing and giving her hand a squeeze. "It took a bit longer than expected but we're finally going to make it up a few floors."

"Yeah," Kate said, giving his hand a squeeze back. "Longest elevator ride ever." Beat. "No offence."

"Probably deserve worse," Ben replied.

The doors opened and Bod held it open for Ben and his child.

"It was nice to meet you," he said after a moment. "Good luck with everything."

"Yeah, good luck," Kate agreed. She sounded like she meant it, though it was a bit subdued.

"Yeah," Ben said, having safely put his kid back down in the stroller, pushing it out of the elevator. "You too."

He didn't look back as he went on his way.

"Are you all right?" Bod asked after Ben had gone on his way and they'd gotten out of the elevator. "Ready for some ice cream?"

Kate, the impulsive little creature that she was, reached up to kiss him. People could just deal, it wasn't obscene or anything, although it did seem to involve some emotion on her part.

She was just having some revelations here, okay.

Bod hadn't been expecting to get kissed but he certainly didn't mind it. He responded quickly and kept a hold on her hand as he did so.

No, it wasn't obscene but it was nice all the same. He was enjoying it.

As he should have been! Otherwise she might have been doing something wrong, which she wasn't. She kept kissing him for a little while longer, too, enjoying it. Feeling like it was important somehow.

"I love you," she murmured, once she pulled back a little. "You're the only one I've ever been in love with."

"I know. And I'm so fucking happy for it." Seriously. There was something deeply terrifying about the idea of getting stuck in Overland Park, raising a baby way too early. "I love you."
